Afternoon slipped into dusk as we sat in the lounge.
Around us, chatter came in lulls and flutters and every so often the bride and groom moved around hand in hand, greeting the guests and chatting.
They really did look good together, her golden hair still curled in perfect waves. Her hand never left his. Was it really so simple to have a happy ending? Was all it took finding the right person? My eyes flicked to the bar. In my short life so far, I had never so much as considered settling down, but then maybe the right person hadn’t come along.
As evening drew on, the happy couple were summoned to see the layout of the night time reception as we readied ourselves for a boogie. The hammer banged against another solid frame and I jumped in my seat, almost spilling my fourth drink. Or was it my fifth? Either way, it didn’t matter. It didn’t have enough alcohol in it for me to be confused and that’s what mattered.
“Ladies and gentleman, the bride and groom would like to invite you to watch their first dance.”
The hall was swept up in a flurry of activity as women rushed from their seats and made towards the second room and men grabbed cameras.
I followed Olivia as she hurried past the foyer. This time though, as my attention fought to slide up to the picture of Patrick Smith at the top of the stairs, I resisted. Giving him my energy was like giving him power. I had to ignore it as best I could—enjoy what was left of the day and get the night over with.
A DJ had set up in the corner of a square dance floor beyond the long table, which had now been pushed back against the wall and was covered in white drapes, ready for the buffet. Olivia pushed her way past the small gathering towards the dance floor, where we saw her brother and Jessica locked in a tight embrace as they swirled. Both wore deep smiles as they waltzed and I knew as I watched them in that moment, that they were the epitome of true happiness.
Her dress twirled and his coat tails flapped. Spotlights danced across them in a rainbow of colours and people snapped their cameras while beside me the mother of the bride took a video, keeping the device as steady as a rock all the while that she cried. I wondered whether she was happy for her daughter, or mourned her own loss.
Life could be cruel to people. Sometimes it took them away through marriage or work or other things. Other times it was death. My parents were taken away from me, their deaths a seared reminder in my mind of the pain they went through and the hole it left in my heart. Every time I was at the funeral parlour I felt that same pain like an eternal torment I was going to be forced to endure.
Patrick Smith too, was taken away by death.
